Change your life and career

My Coaching Style

What to expect from coaching with me

There are thousands of people who call themselves coaches. Some, like executive coaches, specialise in particular client groups. Others, like cognitive behaviour coaches, specialise in specific methods or approaches. And some, such as relationship or career coaches focus on a particular issue.

You might also see what I do described as a career coach, executive coach, personal development coach, coaching psychologist, professional coach, psychological coach, transition coach, transformational coach or life coach.

But rather than focus on a label I focus on the outcome. What I want for you is to feel more satisfied and fulfilled in your life and career.

I work from the premise that we construct our own realities and so my goal is to help you understand how you construct yours.

We look at the stories you tell yourself and others about who you are and who they are. You’ll become aware of how these stories may be helpful or unhelpful to you living your life.

I help you separate ‘you’ from ‘your situation’, to view it from afar.

Similarly, careers don’t exist in isolation, so we’ll explore your career in a wider context than simply what jobs you’ve done.

I help you to recognise what does and does not work in your life. Then I support you to develop the skills and competences to behave and act in a way that is healthy for you and takes you to a better place.

Inspiring Advice and Development London and Surrey

I work with professional or graduate level, career minded people ranging in age from 20s to 50s. Typically, my clients work in law, finance and IT. They’re scientists, technical specialists, engineers, surveyors and architects. But this is not an exclusive list. Just a guide.

Many clients have career questions –

Am I in the right career? Do I want to become a partner? Would self-employment suit me? I’m in an ideal job yet I feel unsettled. I have lots of ideas about what I could do and stay stuck with indecision and uncertainty. I want my career to be meaningful but don’t know where to start.

Some clients have wider issues –

"I get good feedback yet I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. I constantly feel out of my depth, out of control, overwhelmed, stressed. I don’t know what I want. I don’t know who I am. I have some important decisions to make and don’t know where to start. I feel like time is passing by and I’ve made no progress."

We talk mostly. I create a safe space for you to explore anything that feels relevant and that you’d like to address.

Although it’s a collaborative relationship, it’s not a cosy chat and I may well ask provocative and challenging questions to increase your self-awareness. But it’s non-judgemental and respectful. I listen and gently challenge you.

Sometimes we might get creative if I think this has the potential to help you in your development – but don’t worry this won’t involve drawing!

We start from an understanding that we can’t change other people. But if we accept that our world and reality is constructed, we can reframe it, think of it in a different way and explore things from other perspectives.
In our conversations I’ll ask you to reflect on and describe where you are and where you’d like to be. I’ll question you to help you elaborate on and explore what’s bothering you. This can include your thoughts and beliefs around the issue(s) as well as your feelings and emotions.

We’ll look at your narrative by which I mean the story you tell of your life. This will include your identity, who you are and what your world feels like. How do you position yourself in your world? How do you relate to people around you?

We may well talk about your family of origin, cultural and societal influences and how these may have impacted you. And although we explore the past and how this influences the present, we focus most on how you are in the here and now. We introduce different practices, exercises and small adjustments that will help you make the changes you want to make.
I work with you holistically to identify the thoughts, beliefs and ideas that stop you from getting what you want. This will help you shift your perspective so that you can appreciate yourself more and feel good about yourself, help you capitalise on your strengths and achieve fulfilment and your full potential.

In the time between sessions you’ll experiment, practice, notice and learn. This isn’t about solving problems head on. You make small changes. You reflect on what happens. You check in to see if you feel better, freer. If so, we carry on. If not, we modify and continue.

• You’ll become more aware.
• You’ll gain clarity on your values, priorities and what you want in life
• You’ll make profound changes, and they’ll stick
• You’ll experience a shift in your mindset

I cannot change you and you can’t change other people. I can support you in working out what steps and paths could be in the right direction for you.

But you need to take responsibility. This is a process, not a quick fix. This is not a formula for problem-solving, with an action plan where I hold you to account.
